Hot Property: A Newly Constructed Craftsman in Vickery Place

This bright and airy build fits right in to its historic East Dallas neighborhood.

East Dallas has always been popular, but in 2020, it might be the most coveted neighborhood in the city. As a result, Manett Street is brimming with brand-new townhomes, while monolithic apartment complexes seem to pop up on Greenville Avenue overnight.

The Vickery Place neighborhood of East Dallas, however, refuses to compromise on its historic charm. In 2006, passionate residents established a Vickery Place Conservation District to protect the architecture and culture of their little pocket of Dallas, which is bounded by North Central Expressway and Belmont, Goodwin, and Greenville Avenues. As a result, there’s a beautiful cohesion to each tree-lined street, even as new homes are added and old ones torn down.

That’s why 5431 Bonita Avenue fits in seamlessly, though it’s a brand-new build. It’s surrounded by traditional homes with old-fashioned scalloped trims, bungalows with colorful doors, and other Craftsmans with intricate pillars. Though 5431 isn’t as bold as some of its neighbors, its façade is equally warm and welcoming. A wooden front door complements the creamy white paint, and understated landscaping lets the architecture take center stage.

The interior palette is also anchored by whites and wood tones, and natural light streams through the many windows and sets of French doors. Gold accents are sprinkled throughout each room, from the pendant lights in the kitchen to the drawer pulls in the laundry room. Other delicate details add visual interest without feeling too busy, like the herringbone fireplace and intricate mantel in the living room.

Upstairs, the bedrooms feel airy thanks to the vaulted ceilings and big windows, and each of the spacious bathrooms features a different tile pattern. There’s also a bonus room with glass doors for a bit of privacy—it could easily be transformed into a home office or gym.

The backyard boasts plenty of greenery, a shaded patio, and a detached guest house.
