Robert L. Thornton (aka known as “Mr. Dallas” among journalists) was a prominent Dallas businessman, mayor, and of course, the man for whom R.L. Thornton Freeway is named. He also lived out his sunset years (from 1928 to 1964) in a stunning French-inspired estate on Gaston Avenue. You’ve probably seen it, or at least the 8-foot stone-and-hedge wall and elegant wrought iron gate that separates it from the street. Now, for the first time since its current owner purchased it and began meticulous restorations back in 2005, you can own that little piece of Dallas history, christened Chateau des Grotteaux (“House of the Cave”) for $2,895,000.

“When you drive by this house, it’s natural to wonder what life is like at Chateau des Grotteaux,” says DeCarla Anderson, the Dave Perry-Miller agent with whom the house is listed. “I’m thrilled to report it’s every bit as fascinating as you might expect.”

Those fascinating elements include numerous statues and sculptures throughout the expansive grounds of the one-acre estate, preserved architectural elements from the early 20th century time period in which it was constructed, and a “secret garden,” added recently by the current owner, who is responsible for leaving the grounds in impeccable shape. Other recent additions to note are the new tile roof, oxidized copper gutters, and a mosquito misting system (something all homes and places in Dallas should be required to have).

Unfortunately, one of the most intriguing elements, a rumored tunnel that would have run from the southern-most corner of the property to White Rock Lake and may have been used during Prohibition to transport liquor, has been sealed by the City of Dallas. But, like that rumored tunnel, the true allure of 6941 Gaston Avenue is intangible.
