Hot Property: Blogger Amy Havins’ Beautifully Remodeled Home

152,000 followers on Instagram may associate Amy Havins (aka @DallasWardrobe) with the contents of her closet, but her interiors game is just as strong. With the help of designer Cindy Sontag, the new mom and lifestyle blogger completely transformed a 1940s, slate gray home in Highland Park in just two years’ time. Every inch and surface was redone, from the master bedroom and closet to the powder room and kitchen. A guest house was converted into a two-car garage, and the side of the house scored a putting green.

It was a lot! And thankfully, it was chronicled in all its before-and-after glory on Havins’ popular blog, “Dallas Wardrobe.” So when I stumbled upon a handsome deep blue room in the “New Listings” section of Allie Beth Allman’s website, I knew I was looking at Havins’ chic, final result.

I caught up with Havins to talk contractors, ensuring a blue-and-white theme doesn’t turn cheesy, and why she and her husband are moving on from the epic project.

 

What drew you to the Lorraine Avenue home?

From walking into the house, we immediately felt right at home. We specifically were drawn to the French doors that opened into the backyard, the abundance of natural light, and the back porch. The home felt like a blank canvas and we really wanted to put our own touch on it.

Were you looking for a home to renovate?

For the location and price point we wanted to be in, we knew there would be some necessary renovations regardless of what we decided to purchase.



What was the biggest contribution from your designer, Cindy Sontag?

To the average eye (aka me), you don’t know why everything works but it just does. The way Cindy does things is amazing. From the pulls in our master bathroom to the lamp that we waited five months to get in our family room, everything just works. She is the most patient person and really made my vision of wanting a blue-and-white home that doesn’t scream blue and white in a cheesy way come to life.



Will the furniture pictured be included in the sale?

No, the furniture will not be included in the sale price but that being said, everything has a price tag.

Any tips for others looking to buy a home to renovate?  Make sure you are patient. I feel like, in your head, renovations seem like they should happen quickly, but they take time. Also, find a contractor that you love.

I cannot say enough nice things about our contractors. We worked with Richard Williams and Associates and they were a dream.

Why did you choose to move on from the house so quickly after you finished renovating? This has probably been the most asked question, and I know I sound like a crazy person, but I really do love a project. I’ve learned that I work better when I am busy! Thankfully, our new house will not require any renovations, but it will need some décor, which means that I get to spend more time with Cindy, whom I just adore!
