Shiplap and La La Land have a lot in common. When Joanna and Chip Gaines started shiplapping it up on HGTV’s Fixer Upper, people went nuts for the look that pays tribute to homes’ historic pasts and evoked a rustic, farmhouse aesthetic. Likewise, people really dug a modern day musical starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. But then their (city of) stars began to burn too bright. The backlash began. What was so great about La La Land anyway? Why are people putting shiplap where shiplap does not belong? When did John Legend become seemingly omnipresent in the world?

At the end of the day, La La Land is a wonderful movie, and shiplap, when used logically, can have a beautiful effect. Case in point: 907 N College Street. Purchased by Monica Haggard and her husband Toby last year, the 1950s cottage was renovated in May. “Both my family and my husband’s settled in Collin County in the mid 1800s, and I love the history and architecture of our county,” Monica said in an email. “I got involved with restoring distressed properties many years ago in an attempt to preserve Collin County historic properties rather than letting them go to builders who prefer to tear them down.”

The original shiplap, hardwood floors, and wood windows were completely restored, while Carrara marble, stainless steel appliances, and contemporary fixtures add just the right modern take on the home’s classic appeal. Damien Chazelle would approve.
