When we think of design trends, our mind quickly goes to Instagram. And when we think of eye-catching interiors on Instagram, we think of Homepolish. The online company offers affordable, in-home design services by the hour in Dallas, and consistently fills our feeds with swoon-worthy spaces. To help us stay on point for the year ahead, we sought out local Homepolish designer Erika Yeaman, who had advice on everything from incorporating Pantone’s color of the year to investing in unique artwork.

(For additional inspiration, we’ve included several glimpses into Yeaman’s warm, layered Mid-Century home, which made its virtual debut on ElleDecor.com earlier this month.)

What trends are you ready to say goodbye to in 2017?

Although we have been heading in this direction, predictable combinations seem to be more on the way out then maybe in the past.  This goes for furnishings and also for finish out. Clients seem to value more than ever a space that feels unique and a true reflection of who they are rather than something they have seen over and over.  I think Pinterest has helped many people feel more adventurous and maybe confident to try more unique ideas.

Is there anything trending for 2017 that surprised you?

I wouldn’t say it surprised me, but I am happy to report that along the same vein of authenticity mentioned above, people seem more into artisan items vs accessories that are available in bulk from bigger chain stores, even if the ticket price is a little higher.  I think more people are catching onto the idea of having fewer quality pieces vs. just having more.

What trends do you think Dallasites will be most excited to embrace in 2017?

Color. Dallas does not shy on color and this works well this year as unique combinations seem to be a fun and exciting element to explore: greens with lavender, pink and mustard and multiple shades of blue with reddish tones.

What’s an easy (and maybe temporary) way to incorporate Pantone’s color of the year into your décor?

Open your window treatments more and let what is outside play a bigger role in your interior space.  If this isn’t possible, depending upon your location, add a great plant that has a lighter greenish, spring vide.  And then there is obviously the ability to add pillows with this beautiful green as an accent.  Or even consider adding a trim to pillows you already have.

Are there any trends Dallasites should invest in?

Buy local, original and vintage. There are so many talented and wonderful artist and artisans in Texas (and more specifically in Dallas) that can customize something for you that you will not find everywhere else.  Also we have a wonderful array of great vintage dealers and sources.  And you will be supporting your community, which adds a little extra something to an item that will at the end of the day live with you.
