Add Some Chalk Into Your Life

Get your home and hands a little dirty with some chalk. You won't regret it.

Chalkboards are great. They’re fun, easy, and different, and they definitely don’t just belong in the classroom.

I’ve been really interested in the trend of using chalkboards and chalkboard paint to decorate the home, so I wanted to share three ways  you can get chalky ASAP. (P.S. You can buy chalkboard paint for only $6.99 at any Michaels location in Dallas.)

1. For utility.

Who would have thought that a little board of chalk could help you stay organized?

If you’re keen on cooking every night for your family and want them to know what’s on the menu, keep it simple and in plain view with a DIY chalkboard kitchen menu courtesy of Adventures of a DIY Mom. What I like about this is the fact that you’ll never forget what you’re concocting each night or need to keep a mental checklist. Not only does this let everyone know what their taste buds can expect, but it also gives you the flexibility to edit your weekly menu in case you’d rather watch reality TV than slave away in the kitchen. If you don’t have time to craft this on your own, check out this artisan Williams-Sonoma one for $39.95.

Next up, this chalkboard paint dresser. It’s a super fun and effective way to stay organized and keep track of the plethora of stuff you use everyday. I absolutely love the way in which the white chalk contrasts with the blue drawers. If you’re not a fan of blue, switch it up with some colored chalkboard paint to contrast any piece of furniture.

2. For decoration.

“I like what you’ve done with the place.” That will be all you’ll hear from visitors when they see the fun additions you can make in your home with chalkboard paint.

First up, this decorative piece, found in D Home’s Sept./Oct. 2013 issue, looks fantastically vintage in a room filled with wooden décor. It’s certain to draw attention from anyone that goes in the room, especially if they’d been expecting to see a mirror in that frame. (Plot twist.) You could try it at home with this arched mirror made of mango wood that could certainly be made even cooler with the addition of some chalkboard paint.

This next image proves that black and white will never not go together. If you have a primarily white room, add chalkboard on a door just like this one from D Home’s Jul./Aug. 2012 issue.

3. For hobbies.

Let chalkboard paint make you fall in love with your hobby all over again.

chalkboard3

Attention, green thumbs! Add some spice to your spices with chalkboard labeling. I personally have no talent in the field of herb growing, but these adorable chalk-labeled jars make me want to give it another shot. You can pick up these chalk-labeled mason jars from Bed Bath & Beyond for just $2.99.

chalkboard7

If you’re constantly looking for new ways to excite guests at those dinner parties you love hosting, look no further. POPSUGAR’s DIY chalkboard silver platter will have all your guests at the next wine and cheese party asking where you got the idea. You’re welcome.

These are just a few of the countless ways to have a blast with chalkboard, but I hope it got you thinking outside the box for your next DIY or home decor project. Happy chalking!
