Did you know that actress-singer Ronee Blakley and German film director Wim Wenders married in Caldwell, Idaho in 1979 and their marriage only lasted 12 months? Do you know who actress-singer Ronee Blakley is? I’m betting the answer to both of those questions is a resounding “No.” But if you had The Best of People/The First Decade you could learn about that, read about Miss Piggy, check out covers featuring C-3PO and ET, and read long articles about Patricia Neal and Irene Gubrud. It really is a super fun book for any Gen Xer who grew up with a mom who got a subscription every week. It was published in 1984 (around the time most of the D Home team was born—aside from sad old me. Yay!), and it’s full of good stuff about Alan Alda, Jane Fonda, Michael Jackson, Liz Taylor, Ed Asner, and so many more folks that maybe you haven’t thought about in a while. Whenever I have company, they are drawn to this book (as well as Glamour’s Big Book of Dos and Don’ts, also vintage) because it’s hilarious. So that’s my recommendation for the day: Go check out the vintage coffee table books at Half Price Books, get some that make you happy, and then mix them in with your fancy Tom Ford book.
