Hot Property: 2001 North Buckner Boulevard

A "green" house for Saint Patrick's Day.

2001 North Buckner Boulevard was “green” well before it was trendy. Built by Fort Worth native Frank Moreland in 1989, the earth sheltered home is known to almost everyone in the White Rock area as “the underground house.” They’re not taking any liberties with that nickname either; 100% of the house is situated entirely underground.

The Southwestern-style home’s roof is made up of 100 tons of reinforced concrete and 1,000 tons of earth and features 32 solar panels, making for an extremely secure, private and energy efficient home. Remember that summer where the temperature blew past the 100-degree mark for more than 70 days? The electricity bill for this 4,561 square foot home for June, July and August combined was just over $200. June, July and August combined.

With a house as unique as this, you can bet there are a few fun facts to go with it. Here’s our favorite: According to Vicki White (with whom the home is listed), there was no address for this plot of land when it was first purchased. In keeping with the futuristic feel of the home, a request to the city was made for the number 2001 as a reference to 2001: A Space Odyssey.
