Fantastic fruits and veggies at the Dallas Farmers Market.

There’s something very nostalgic about taking a trip to the Farmers Market. Personally, it reminds me of shopping in Shed 1 and 2 of the Dallas Farmers Market with my grandfather every Sunday—there are specific booths, like Lemley’s Tomatoes and Peaches, which I still frequent when I go.

Summer, before it gets too hot, is the ideal time to stop by and pick up some local, fresh produce. Wondering where the closest spot to pick some up is? We’ve got a list of the major markets in North Texas below.

DALLAS

Dallas Farmers Market
1010 S. Pearl Expwy. 214-664-9110.
Open Monday through Sunday, 8 am to 5 pm, 362 days a year

With the Dallas Farmers Market currently undergoing major renovations, it means there’s going to be a completely new, updated look for the iconic downtown shopping complex. Shed 1 will be wholly dedicated to farmers, their representatives, and maybe even some flower vendors.

Oak Lawn United Methodist Church Farmers Market
3014 Oak Lawn Ave. 214-521-5197.
Saturdays, 8 am to noon
Dates open: June 1 to October 25

In 2013, missions coordinator Byron Proutt and longtime church member Mary Landrum wanted a market that would get people out of the high-rises and into the sunshine. They certainly succeeded. Don Baugh, a farmer known for his famous heirloom tomatoes, brings his red beauties to Uptown every week.

White Rock Market
1st and 3rd Saturdays at Lakeside Baptist Church, 9150 Garland Rd. Saturdays, 8 am to 1 pm
2nd and 4th Saturdays at the Green Spot, 702 N. Buckner Blvd. Saturdays, 8 am to 1 pm
Dates open: March 15 to December 13

Started in 2009, WRLM has become one of the best-run farmers markets in Dallas. A variety of local craft artists set up their tables next to Paul Quinn College’s farm’s chocolate mint herbs and Empire Baking Company’s freshly baked loaves. Stroll, sample wine, and try Kathy Neumuller’s JJ&B jams. The toasted pecan-pepper
jam tastes best with Brie or cream cheese with crackers.

St. Michael’s Farmers Market
8011 Douglas Ave.
Saturdays, 8 am to noon
Dates open: April 5 to September 6

Even though St. Michael’s—located in the north parking lot of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church—is one of Dallas’ newer markets, it has quickly become a favorite. It’s open rain or shine. Most people drop by to pick up some of Peachy Page Farm’s Bounty peaches or Hudspeth Farm’s pastured pork. Berry Best Farms has some of the prettiest blueberries you’ll ever see, too.

ARLINGTON

Downtown Arlington Farmers Market
215 E. Front St., Arlington. 817-633-2332.
Fridays and Saturdays, 8 am to 1 pm
Dates open: Year-round

On random Fridays and Saturdays, don’t be too surprised if unusual ingredients, like lemongrass and duck eggs, show up in downtown Arlington. Once, the market even offered free hula hoops to the first 250 customers. Another weekend, it did a wine sampling and tasting with Bonterra Wine. There’s clearly never a dull moment at the Arlington Farmers Market.

COPPELL

Coppell Farmers Market
768 W. Main St., Coppell.
972-304-7043.
Saturdays, 8 am to noon
Dates open: March 22 to November 22

A six-minute drive from Coppell High School takes you to Coppell Farmers Market, a small yet intimate community of vendors from around the area. People start carrying away bag-loads of eggs and meat from Rehoboth Ranch first thing every Saturday morning. Always arrive early and bring your dogs. They’ll be just as mesmerized as you watching Grapevine Grains’ owners make fresh-rolled oats right in front of you.

FORT WORTH

Cowtown Farmers Market
3821 Southwest Blvd., Fort Worth.
Saturdays, 8 am to noon
Open year-round

Everything sold at Cowtown Farmers Market is made or grown within 150 miles of Fort Worth, like Latte Da Dairy’s famous plain chévre, feta, and Caerphilly. Remember to bring your reusable tote so you can take home some of Prairie Oasis Farms’ pastured chicken. Sometimes, there’s even an old-timey fiddle-and-guitar jam session happening nearby.

FRISCO

Frisco Farmers Market
6048 Frisco Square Blvd., Frisco.
Saturdays, 8 am to 1 pm
Dates open: May to October

On July 4, 2007, the Frisco Noon Lions Club started a tiny market to make fresh produce more readily available to the community. At first, there were only a few vendors (like Keith Copp of D-Bar Farms and Guy Money of The Honey Pot). Seven years later, there are about 40 vendors total, including the famous family-owned Along Came Tamale, which specializes in sweet dessert tamales.

GRAND PRAIRIE

Grand Prairie Farmers Market
120 W. Main St., Grand Prairie.
972-237-4599.
Saturdays, 8 am to 1 pm
Dates open: March 29 to November 24; holiday market runs from December 6 to December 20

Even when it’s December, this outdoor market rallies on, freezing or not. Round Rock Honey beekeepers lead workshops and classes, and one time the market hosted a petting zoo. Check out the market’s active Facebook page, too. It’s got plenty of up-to-date info.

GRAPEVINE

Grapevine Farmers Market
325 S. Main St., Grapevine.
817-793-8634.
Thursday through Saturday, 8 am to 4 pm
Dates open: April 10 to October 18

Once summer hits, the good people of Grapevine race to this outdoor farmers market for organic white plums and Freestone peaches from Pittsburg, Texas. Sometimes, they go just to watch a friendly watermelon seed-spitting showdown. All sorts of fruits and baby eggplants from Canton lay in little baskets. All you have to do is point to one and they’ll dump it into your bag.

MCKINNEY

Historic Downtown McKinney

Chestnut: 315 S. Chestnut St., McKinney.
972-562-8790.
Saturdays, 8 am to noon
Dates open: April 5 to October 4

Adriatica: 6851 Virginia Pkwy., McKinney.
972-562-8790.
Thursdays, 3 pm to 7 pm
Dates open: April 3 to October 9

Die-hard fans of the McKinney Farmers Market love it for the yearly “Taste of the McKinney Farmers Market” event, farm-to-table dinner, and winter markets. They’ll shop even when it’s mid-December and freezing outside. Next to an old-fashioned wood-burning fireplace, they’ll huddle, sampling cookies and buying a dozen Tamale Company’s beef tenderloin tamales just in time for Christmas.

PLANO

Collin County Farmers Market
3314 N. Central Expwy., Plano.
Saturdays, 9 am to 1 pm
Dates open: April 19 to October 25

Now that the Collin County Farmers Market is in its second season, organizer Kari Gates of Spring Creek Organic Farm is planning more free community events and classes to make this family market even better. A cup of Coffee Del Rey’s locally roasted coffee paired with EMA Baking Company’s almond and saffron Martin’s Biscotti makes shopping nearly 30 vendors at Fairview Farms one of the best decisions you could make on a Saturday.

RICHARDSON/FAIRVIEW

Four Seasons Market

FAIRVIEW: 329 Town Place.
Saturdays, 10 am to 3 pm
Dates open: March 22 to November 16

RICHARDSON: 677 W. Campbell Rd.
Sundays, 11 am to 3 pm; summer hours 9 am to 2 pm
Dates open: Year-round

Outdoor winter markets are harder to find, but the Four Seasons—a European-style, family-friendly affair—is a year-round party for farmers, craftsmen, children, and local musicians. At the Fairview location, there’s a dog park, community garden, and even a little beach. Sign up for the newsletter to get more vendor info.

ROCKWALL

Rockwall Farmers Market
101 E. Rusk St., Rockwall
Saturdays, 8 am to noon
Dates open: May 3 to September 27

Located in the historic Downtown Square, Rockwall’s May-through-September market is a Saturday morning routine for many residents. They go for Gilbert-Pruett Family Farms’ produce spread and Just Pie’s award-winning buttermilk Pap’s Texan Pecan.
