Hello. It’s Friday. You know what that means. It’s time for some words from our fun friend, ID Collection’s Jim Williamson. Bartenders start pouring. Our favorite day of the week has finally arrived! Unless you have been summering in a neighboring galaxy, you also know that tonight is the opening ceremony for the Olympics! My partner is so excited he is preparing a special Olympic-themed dinner party. In honor of that event, I moved my much cherished Lignet Roset table from my Uptown digs to our Fair Park digs. (The details of that move is another story.) The dinner is apparently inspired by the Olympic torch. Note to self: Skip flowers. Buy a fire extinguisher.
In other summer news, I haven’t had time to do any summering. Simmering, yes. I mean with all the K-Stew, Mrs. Jackson, and the Chick-fil-A kerfuffle going on, who has time? I can tell you I do miss me some Malibu. I think perhaps in another life I was a Californian. I may have even shared a previous life with Shirley MacLaine—I do have the legs for it. Or if string theory is true, I could be there right now but in another dimension in an alternate universe. To many, CA has always been alternate universe.
Back in the here and now, I had a visitor in from the land of Pimms and pomp. The lovely and talented Bernie de Le Cuona, of the luxury fabric house that bears her name, was in town. It was actually her first visit to the Big D, and I was happy to give her a brief introduction to our city. During lunch at Parigi, we discussed everything from the weather and running to trying to figure out what the heck those mascots are at the Olympics.
Growing up in South Africa, she found the heat here almost delightful (I know!), especially after such a soggy summer in London. She loves to run. I love to run, too, although my knees prefer a nice brisk walk. Anyway, she was somewhat disappointed to see that men weren’t running around in 10-gallon hats. Apparently, television broadcasts began in South Africa in 1975. So when folks bought television, guess what show greeted them? Dallas. I was happy to tell her that most hats only make appearances for the Cattle Barron’s Ball, Sue Ellen still looks great, and interior design in Dallas has moved on from the mauve and brass of those glossy 1980s.
