What Makes Stylish Photog Gray Malin Tick?

I’ve mentioned my fondness for photographer Gray Malin’s super graphic (and super chic) images before, and, as with most of my “obsessions”, I had to know more about this Dallas native. Here’s the 411.

Malin grew up in Preston Hollow, attended Lamplighter, and then graduated from ESD in 2004. After ESD, he headed to Emerson College in Boston to study photography and marketing before making his way to Los Angeles. He set up shop at the Melrose Fairfax Flea Market, where his prints caught the attention of gallery owners, interior designers, and stylish art-loving Angelenos, before eventually showing at the Dallas Museum of Art, David Streets Gallery in Beverly Hills, and in the Los Angeles Art Association’s Gallery 825.

Now Malin works independently with online curators, art buyers, and interior designers who clamor for his aerial shots of surfer-specked beaches and his iconic photographs of Prada Marfa. He also does the occasional One King’s Lane Sale, like, say…the one occurring now (pop over and take a peek).

Background is fun and all, but you know we really wanted to know what makes him tick creatively, so we asked the photographer to share some of his favorite things here on the blog this week, and, happily, he obliged. I’ll tease you by saying that he has an affinity for sparkly garlands, Palm Springs mid-century modern, and witty silhouette art, and you can check out his full list after the jump. Enjoy!

1. Confetti System. These hand made decorative garlands are a must for any festive gathering.

2. Bonobos. This men’s clothing website has slowly taken over my entire wardrobe. Started by two Stanford grads, the vision was to make men’s clothes with a better, tailored fit. Take my advice and order you or your husband/son a pair of the B’s Knees shorts. I love the light pink ones because they have little anchors in the back pocket lining.

3. Jayes Studio. My home is stock full of painted accessories from Jayes Studio. Trays, magazine holders, napkin holders, umbrella stands – you name it, they make it and at a great price!

4. One Kings Lane. I check OKL every morning when I wake up – it’s such a fun way to start the day because you never know what new amazing item you’ll find for your home!

5. Sunny Lands. (ed note: One of) Los Angeles’s greatest philanthropic force, the Annenberg Family, opened the doors of their stunning historic estate near Palm Springs called Sunny Lands this past March. The vibrant gardens amongst the arid landscape mixed with stunning outdoor sculptures and mid-century architecture will inspire anyone to pull out a camera (or an iphone). It is referred to as the west coast’s ‘Camp David’ as many world leaders have stayed at the estate over the past 3 decades.

6. Carter Kustera. If you have ever been in a Barney’s dressing room, or into a Jonathan Adler shop you may have noticed some colorful artwork by the amazing portrait artist, Carter Kustera. Last year as a Christmas present, I had my fiancee and my portrait done which have been fun additions to the art in our living room!

7. Jill Rosenwald. Jill’s outstanding collection of items for the home will have you adding item after item to your shopping cart. Have always been a huge fun of her chevron lamps.

8. Ceylon et Cie. Located in the design district in Dallas, Ceylon et Cie will surely inspire your design aesthetic. Michelle Nussbaumer has traveled the world carefully curating thousands of unique, stunning, and provocative treasures which sit proudly on display in this one-of-a-kind shop.
