Ready for A Print and Pattern Extravaganza? Behold Kyle Knight’s Design Obsessions

(Layout by Charlotte Tobin)

We asked Dallas blogger and decorator Kyle Knight to share some of her favorite things, and she came back with a plethora of pattern goodness. From Matisse inspired outdoor fabrics to bold Chinoiserie-inspired wallpaper and rugs that riff on a star-filled sky, for Knight, prints rule.

After the jump, she shares eight of her latest design obsessions…no neutrals allowed.

1. Outdoor Fabric. I love using some of the new outdoor fabrics for exterior and interior projects. These tough textiles have been vastly improved in the past few years…these days many styles have a wonderful, soft texture and they honestly look like interior fabrics. They are great for hard-working upholstered pieces like sofas, dining chairs, and ottomans (especially in a kid/dog zones) because they are durable and can be easily cleaned. Although it’s not for inside use, I’ve been on the hunt for a fun pattern to pair with classic awning stripes and I’m all about this one from Old World Weavers called Dancing Matisse.

2. Tile. I’ve always had a fascination with tile and the endless possibilities it creates. For centuries tile has been used to decorate everything from bathrooms to subway tunnels and I’m amazed by the design sensibility and craftsmanship behind so many installations. I’m particularly drawn to installations in which bold, graphic patterns are created with tile. Vintage mosaic patterns and borders from American Restoration Tile and cement tiles like the ones made by Popham Design are completely stunning.

3. Stark Antilocarpa Carpet. I just had a custom bound rug made with this pattern, and it looks phenomenal! It’s definitely my new favorite animal print. The style is updated but classic, and it’s chic yet masculine enough to not look fussy like leopard can.

4. Artwork by Brad Eberhard. Smitten is probably the best word to describe my feelings for Brad Eberhard’s paintings. Eberhard is a brilliant colorist and is extremely adept at creating and manipulating forms that combine in exciting, vivacious abstract compositions. I desperately want to acquire one of his pieces so that I can gaze at it everyday…My new favorite is MTN JAG.

5. Cole & Son Frontier Wallpaper. This is an old design that has recently been re-released, and ever since seeing it at Lee Jofa, I’ve been racking my brain on where to use it. I love the deep blues and bright pops of orange, and yellow in the lanterns…it has a very enchanting feel to it.

6. Waylande Gregory. It’s really a joy to see Waylande Gregory pieces back in production. These irresistible iconic ceramic pieces are adorned with exuberant, playful designs and colors and touches of luxe gold. Loaded with personality and style, this is art that serves double-duty as functional home decor. William-Christopher Design sells vintage pieces by the ceramicist, and Forty Five Ten carries the reissued ones.

7. Link OutdoorLink Outdoor makes fresh, unique furniture, cushions, pillows, and quilts, all designed for use in the great outdoors. With snazzy trims and gorgeous fabrics, Link has certainly upped the ante in exterior decor, and I can’t get enough of their polished, preppy aesthetic. I’m really obsessed with their outdoor quilts…they are made to order so you can pick size, color, fabric, and trim.

8. Arzu Studio Hope Rugs. I am a huge fan of Arzu rugs…not only do they look amazing and are extremely well-made, these rugs are created by women artisans in Afghanistan. Arzu works with Afghan women and empowers them to become financially independent and gain access to education and health care. Both the product and the mission are amazing, so it’s a win-win! This design, called Dreams is currently on my lust list…
