Friday Fun with Jim Williamson

Did you know that today is my birthday? It is. We should celebrate with some musings from my friend Jim Williamson. He says: “I think by now, after three months of intense heat, we can all say, ‘Over it. Officially and unanimously, over it!’ The heat makes me grumpy. My friends are grumpy. My clients are grumpy. It’s too hot after work to run anything but the A/C. So instead, I do what all good Dallasites do: eat and drink. (Try Restaurant Ava. Yes, it’s in Rockwall, but it’s good and worth the drive!)

Unfortunately, all that eating does not make me want to shop because of the extra pounds added to my man tummy. The very thought of trying on fall clothes makes me sweat. I used to love summer—now, I definitely favor fall. I remember last September, I had to go to New York City on business. I had moved from the hotel to a friend’s apartment across from the Dakota. (Long story short: the hotel room, which I didn’t book, was in Times Square. It was Fashion Week, so there were no other hotel rooms to be had.)

Anyway, I was on my way to lunch at Bergdorf‘s one day, and it was so hot that I was sweating through my Lanvin. (Ed note: sexy!) But the next day it was fall. It was that fast! So even though I had a headache and wasn’t feeling so great, I started walking. I walked and I walked and I walked. I walked until I saw Steve Guttenberg enter a deli, and I decided to follow. If Steve Guttenberg likes a deli, it has to be good, right?

So I go in and order a sandwich. It arrives, and it’s huge. As I’m trying to stuff this delicious goodness in my mouth—by the way my head is pounding, body aching, and nose running by this point—who should sit at the table across from me? The Guttenberg. But there was nothing to be done. There was no way to be charming and appealing at this point. I released the sandwich, wiped my mouth and nose, and left the deli.

By the time I flew home later that day, I was really sick. I should thank the adorable couple who saw how sick I was and reminded me that I needed to retrieve my luggage and briefcase before leaving the plane.

So where does all this rambling leave us? Well, fall will come. Eventually. And when it does, you’ll need cozy pillows like these great ones from de le Cuona complete with leather detailing. They are simple but chic, and they’re equestrian inspired—but without the obvious horse bit. I think you need at least three or four. Heck, make it five. In the meantime, I  hope fall arrives sooner rather than later, and if you should run in to Steve Guttenberg, tell him he has excellent taste in delis.”
