Friday Fun with Jim Williamson

It’s Friday, so you know what that means. It’s time for ID Collection Jim Williamson‘s musings! Today, he says: “I’m back from my all too brief trip to Malibu. Tessa, my new bff  [What??? –ed note] who is also a dead ringer for Blake Lively, and her boyfriend Ed were perfect hosts. Somehow they didn’t seem to mind hanging out with the pre-middle-age crowd.

Friday was probably the best day—it was a “Jimbo” kind of a day. We hung by the pool, drank mimosas, napped, and then had dinner at the Hungry Cat. (I had to see the much hyped floors from MDD.) Then we had after-dinner drinks at the Viceroy. Dinner was amazing. The line to get into the Viceroy was less so.

It all sounds kind of glamorous, much like this image of the lovely and talented Denise McGaha from M Designs. Danny Piassick took this photo in the showroom. Denise is probably one of the nicest people you will ever meet. She had lunch catered for the entire staff, which has now endeared her to us all for life.

Don’t you wish every day could be glamorous? Me, too! But glamour, like design, takes a lot of work. Let’s take that pillow on your sofa. How may people do you think it took to get that throw on you sofa? One, maybe two? It’s probably closer to 100. Before that fabric even makes it to the showroom where it can be discovered by your designer and selected for your pillow, it first has to be designed by a team in Europe. After that, someone has to approve the design. Then the mill has to make the yarns, weave, test, inspect, tag, and cut the fabric into samples. The samples have to be labled, folded, packaged, and shipped to the showroom. Once it makes it to the showroom, the fabric has to be hung, steamed, and priced. Samples have to be sorted, stamped, and filed. That’s a lot of people before the order has even been placed. Once that happens then a whole other set of people in different states, on different continents, in different time zones take over. Just for two yards of fabric!

All good to remember when we want to flip out on a designer or a salesperson because our sofa is late or a shipment is delayed. Life may not always be a day at the beach, but at least we can spread a little sunshine in our wake.”
