Don't think sunroom. Think four-seasons room. Use slip covers and throw pillows to change the color scheme between fall-winter and spring-summer. Clockwise, from upper left, a coastal room featured in House Beautiful. A fun Jonathan Adler designed family room. Ikat fabric, which you can now buy at Pottery Barn and West Elm.

Q. I am thinking about a sunroom makeover in our traditional Southern-styled home. I don’t want the typical chinz. No wicker. No wrought iron. No jungle of houseplants. Ideas?

A. Yes! Consider creating a four-seasons room. To accomplish this, start with the flooring. Hardwood is always my go-to choice when I need an area that has a multi-purpose use. Second suggestion: slipcovers! Yes, the age-old never fails me. Depending on your budget, they are widely available and affordable, which makes it easy to change the slips twice a year. Throughout the year you can rotate wonderful pillows with the fabric of the moment, such as a bright Ikat for spring and summer (available by the yard at the Pottery Barn and West Elm) and a wonderful woven tapestry or velvet in the winter. The glass room is your window to the world so make it whatever you need it to be. I love a natural sisal or a great rag rug in summer. When the first chill of fall arrives roll up the summer rug and bring in a wonderful old wool Persian. Add your slips, change some of your accessories such as colorful gourd lamps to a warm pewter or wood, and there you have it: a four-seasons sunroom that is family and pet friendly with a personality all of its own.
