Sherry Hayslip, recognized as one of the top interior designers in the country, has won more design awards than anyone in Dallas. In other words, she is probably our most decorated decorator. Here, she shares some good, and very valuable, advice on ways to bring your look up to date. I once asked her what she would be if not a designer—she said “a philosopher.” From her answers you can get the careful yet creative ideas and kind of deep thinking that goes into making up her design skills. And, guess what, there is no hourly fee for these little gifts, just a quick log on to D Home Live:
“1. Mirrors shouldn’t scare people—the intial surprise of seeing yourself soon disappears into the expanded space a mirror creates. Be aware that what is reflected in the mirror should be beautiful or interesting. 2. Nature is truly the best decorator. I am fascinated by rough rock that is transformed into a jewel, and there is always poetry in the metamorphosis that occurs when natural objuects are showcased in manmade environments. 3. Every home should have its own fragrance because scent enhances the pleasure experienced in a place by evoking powerful memories. 4. I love the clash of modern art against traditional in an interior—it makes the space more relevant. And it simultaneously connects you with history and heritage and the present. 5. I like to introduce a crazy pattern in an unexpected color combination in a home that is more restrained. The shock of it wakes the senses and can be delightful.”
Thank you, Sherry, for interesting and unexpected ways to look at how we live.
