DFW Healthcare Brief: Baylor Scott and White Is a Top Four Large Health System and Medical City Plano’s Nursing Recognition

Plus a $6.6 million grant for Scottish Rite and UTSW, the Ho Din Award winner, and more.

Fortune and Merative (formerly known as IBM Watson) have recognized Baylor Scott and White Health, naming it the fourth best large health system among the “Top 15 Health Systems.” Baylor Scott and White is the only Texas Health System listed on Fortune’s Top 100 Health Systems for 2022. According to their evaluation of 2,650 hospitals nationwide Baylor University Medical Center is the No. 6 major teaching hospital in the nation and No. 2 in Texas.


Medical City Plano has achieved Magnet designation for the fourth time for its nursing quality. The American Nurse Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program evaluated organizations for nursing excellence, and only 2.5 percent of hospitals achieve Magnet designation four or more times.


UT Southwestern 2022 graduate Dr. Cayenne Price has been honored with the Southwestern Medical Foundation’s Ho Din Award, the highest honor for a graduating medical student. She is a health activist whose goal is to close the racial gap in healthcare through mentoring and inspiring minority winner women to join the field. The Ho Din award is given to one student per year to recognize medical wisdom and human understanding.


Researchers at Scottish Rite for Children and UT Southwestern Medical Center have been awarded a $6.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to look at the underlying causes of idiopathic scoliosis. This progressive condition causes the spine to curve and appears in children between ages 10 and 15, affecting three million children in the US. The grant will look at the biological causes of the disease to inform future treatments.


Dallas-based optical medical device company Spectral MD Holdings has won the Best Technology Award at the European Mediscience Awards. The company’s devices are enabled with proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms improve treatment decisions in wound care. The European Mediscience Awards is the largest gathering of private and publicly traded healthcare, biotech, and life sciences companies in Europe, attracting 500 UK and European healthcare companies.
