Medical City McKinney opened a new $52 million behavioral health and inpatient rehabilitation institute on September 2. The 80,000 square-foot facility includes 80 adult and geriatric behavioral health patient rooms, 20 inpatient rehabilitation patient rooms, an outdoor healing garden, and leading-edge technology.
“By expanding and moving these services to our main campus, we can meet our community’s needs and provide our behavioral health and inpatient rehabilitation patients with a full continuum of care in one healing location,” Medical City McKinney CEO Ernest C. Lynch said via release. “This expansion further exemplifies our commitment to the care and improvement of human life.”
Medical City McKinney’s new institute will operate under a team of doctors, nurses, and therapists. The facility was designed to focus on natural lighting with an open two-story floor plan. Treatment focus for inpatient rehabilitation will include cardiac rehabilitation, stroke, trauma, orthopedics, brain injuries, neurological and spinal cord injuries, amputations, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis.
The rehabilitation institute opened in response to North Texas’ unmet demand for behavioral health facilities starting back in 2017. At the time, the region had lost nearly a third of its inpatient behavioral health capacity due to facility violations and increased regulations.
In July of 2019, North Texas had only 580 licensed behavioral beds, a much fewer per capita than smaller counties around the state. Due to the lack of beds, emergency psych patients began to spill over into the regular emergency department, sometimes creating a disturbance with non-psych patients.
To address the growing need for mental health services, Perimeter Health purchased and reopened new facilities in Arlington and Garland during August of last year. While Perimeter Health’s new facilities were created to treat pediatric and adolescent mental health, Medical City McKinney’s rehabilitation center will treat adults over 18.
In addition, Metrocare Services just became the first organization in the county to be a certified community behavioral health clinic, which standardizes care according to national and state guidelines. Paired with the opening of Perimeter Health’s and Medical City’s new facilities over the past few years, the region’s mental health demands are closer to being met, creating opportunities to treat more patients struggling with depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorders.
