Dr. Dan McCoy is no longer with Richardson-based Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, the largest health insurer in the Texas with a 23% market share.

In a statement, BCBSTX said that management at its parent company, Health Care Service Corp., has decided to take a “different leadership approach” in Texas, and that McCoy is no longer with the company. HCSC Senior Vice President of Markets, Jeff Tikkanen, will serve as interim president until a replacement is named.

“BCBSTX exists first and foremost to serve our members,” the statement read. “The BCBSTX health plan has a talented leadership team. They, along with Jeff, will continue to advance our mission to expand access to affordable health care throughout the state.”

In a letter to BCBSTX Texas plan employees, Tikkanen wrote: “We have much to look forward to—despite the current distractions related to the coronavirus pandemic. We’re in this together.”

McCoy was named president in May 2016, succeeding Bert Marshall, who retired after 20 years with the company. McCoy joined BCBSTX in 2012 as divisional senior vice president of Texas market strategy and Texas plan chief medical officer. Prior to Blue Cross, McCoy was managing partner at Texas Dermatology Associates and medical director of the Melanoma Screening Clinic at Sammons Cancer Center and Baylor University Medical Center’s Outpatient Cancer Center. Over the last couple of years, he shared his passion for photography and the insights he gained during the pandemic with D CEO.

Blue Cross Blue Shield recently established a new deal with the electronic health record company Epic, and had opened a number of its own clinics in a partnership with Santitas in the state within the last year. It also won a contract with the Teacher Retirement System of Texas.

McCoy is the second North Texas top health insurance executive to leave his position this month, after LaMonte Thomas announced he would be leaving Cigna.

What Should We Make of the Rangers’ Accidental Youth Movement?

It's been 26 years since a defending World Series champion leaned on this many young players out of the gate. In Texas' case, that wasn't the plan. But that doesn't make an influx of former first-round picks a bad thing, either.
