Hospitals in Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, and Denton Counties have been sent 79 cases of Remdesivir as part of a shipment of 217 cases statewide to help treat COVID-19 infections. There are 40 doses per case.
Remdesivir is an antiviral drug that can treat multiple viral infections. A study at the National Institute of Health has shown that it can reduce the recovery time from COVID-19, though more research is underway at the NIH. Its developer, Gilead Sciences, donated 1.5 million doses earlier this year, and the federal government is distributing cases as needed to hospitals. Gilead says the price is $30,000 per patient in a normal commercial setting, but has donated the medicine so far. The company is moving to a commercial plan in the next few weeks, but will be charging a fraction of that price.
“We are thankful for the Remdesivir we received and it appears the state was very transparent in their distribution criteria. We also are glad that Texas got 217 cases versus the previous 30 cases in the initial distribution from the federal government. ” DFW Hospital Council CEO Steve Love said via release.
To receive a shipment, hospitals needed to have ICU beds, as the medicine is meant for the sickest of patients. Hospitals were evaluated by region based on the number of ICU beds, but VA and military hospitals are receiving shipments separately. Hospitals and physicians decide how the medicine will actually be used.
