Leapfrog's spring evaluations showed that 24 DFW facilities received an A, while only two received a D.

Dallas-Fort Worth added to the number of hospitals that scored on A on Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Grades for Spring 2020 in North Texas relative to last two years. Medical City tallied 11 hospitals in North Texas that scored an A, while five of Baylor Scott & White’s DFW hospitals received an A, three in the Methodist Health system, and two in the Texas Health System. Clements University Hospital, Zale Lipshy at UTSW, and Dallas Regional Medical Center also received the top grade.

“From providing lifesaving and life improving surgeries to responding to the unique challenges of COVID-19, patient safety is always our top priority,” says Erol Akdamar, FACHE, president of Medical City Healthcare via release. “These superior safety ratings reflect our patient promise across the Medical City Healthcare system of hospitals to providing excellence always in every action, every patient, every time.”

Parkland Health and Hospital System and Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Hurst-Euless-Bedford were the region’s only D, while John Peter Smith received a C. BSW has six hospitals in DFW that received a C, while Texas Health has eight Cs. Methodist and Medical City didn’t have any facilities receive anything less than a B.

“As the nation copes with a challenging pandemic, our gratitude extends to hospital leadership and health care workers everywhere for their tremendous dedication,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group via release. “We hope this ‘A’ helps to thank the people who work and volunteer for Medical City Healthcare facilities. They are role models in putting patients first and their service has been extraordinary in our country’s time of need.”

Leapfrog’s consumer-friendly grading system for general, acute care facilities around the nation is meant to guide patients and practitioners alike. As many as 440,000 people die every year from hospital errors, injuries, accidents and infections, and one of every 25 patients develops an infection while in the hospital. One in four Medicare patients experience injury, harm, or death when admitted to a hospital, and every day, 1,000 people die due to a preventable hospital error.

Two times a year, the organization evaluates over 2,600 hospitals using  national performance measures from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Leapfrog Hospital Survey and other data sources. The safety grades evaluate 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data in two categories: process and structural measures and outcome measures.
