North Texas’ Top Hospitals According to CMS

Baylor Scott & White, UT Southwestern, and Texas Health Resources hospitals boast multiple facilities with four-and five-star ratings.
|

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ recent Hospital Compare ratings have designated 12 regional large health system hospitals as five star facilities. Hospital Compare rankings track and analyze hospital data from more than 4,000 facilities nationwide— including efficiency and timeliness of care and patient experience data as well as reported incidents of complications, deaths, and unplanned hospital visits — to score hospitals’ overall performance on a five-star system. Depending on the metric, data is collected either quarterly or annually.

Though not all facilities within each DFW-area hospital system are listed (many lack enough data to qualify), several of North Texas’ larger systems performed well overall in recent ratings. Baylor Scott & White boasted six five-star facilities and five four-star winners, while UT Southwestern’s University Hospital was awarded five stars and its Zale Lipshy hospital three stars. Parkland and JPS were among few DFW facilities to earn two stars.

Hospital Compare ratings aim to incentivize hospitals to provide higher-quality care while assisting prospective patients with choosing a hospital care location. The competitive push to score well seems to be working hospitals such as Texas Health Resources: the system touted four five-star earners and five four-star-rated hospitals in Hospital Compare’s latest ratings.

“These scores are just one reflection of the data we look at to continue to improve and better serve our patients,” said Kirk King, Hospital Channel chief operating officer for Texas Health, in a release. “The ratings help us serve our patients on a more personal level, while validating that the high-reliability work we’re doing to advance clinical care is truly improving outcomes.”
