Tenet Appoints Army Surgeon General as Independent Director

By |

Tenet Healthcare Corporation has appointed of Dr. Nadja West to its Board of Directors. West is a lieutenant general in the U.S. Army, the 44th Surgeon General of the U.S. Army and the former Commanding General of the U.S. Army Medical Command. She will join the board when she retires from the Army in October.

West was previously the Joint Staff Surgeon at the Pentagon, where she advised the Chairman of the joint Chiefs of Staff and coordinated health services issues. She has been in combat deployment and healthcare leadership positions in the US and abroad, and has received the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, and the Legion of Merit with three Oak Leaf Clusters.

Edward A. Kangas and Brenda J. Gaines will retire from the board in November after long tenures there. Tenet has been working to refresh its board for the last two years, and these retirements will mean that 70 percent of the board will have joined within two years. Kangas served for 12 years as chairman and then lead director after joining in 2003. Gaines joined in 2005 and was most recently Audit Committee chair.

“Dr. West brings significant healthcare experience to our Board through her service in the U.S. Army, her leadership roles in multiple hospitals and her work as a physician. She is also a remarkable individual with deeply rooted core values, which are consistent with the principles we espouse at Tenet as we continue to embrace and accelerate positive change,” said Ron Rittenmeyer, Executive Chairman and CEO. “She will be a great complement to our Board, and we are pleased to welcome her to Tenet.”
