Dr. Frank Filipetto will be the next Dean of the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine at UNT Health Science Center. Filipetto has worked at UNTHSC since 2011 and has been in the role for 18 months on an interim basis.

The new Dean would like to bring a new angle to the medical knowledge for TCOM students. In addition to focusing on science and clinical care, he wants students to graduate with a better understanding of the economics of healthcare, leadership, and entrepreneurship. He also wants to teach physicians to care for their own wellness and avoid burnout.

“It’s not just about graduating the smartest students,” Filipetto said via release.  “Twenty-first century medical education must be about providing students with marketable skills to lead the change in health care that medical education has traditionally not done well. TCOM has always been a leader in creating innovative learning strategies, and we will continue to lead.”

For Filipetto, UNTHSC is a family operation. His wife Dr. Janet Lieto is on faculty and daughter Francesca is a student there. Prior to his work at UNTHSC, he was the acting chairman of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey’s School of Osteopathic Medicine’s Family Medicine Department.

“Dr. Filipetto has a bold vision for medical education deeply focused on student success,” Dr. Charles Taylor, UNTHSC Provost said via release. “His desire to strengthen our partnerships will benefit TCOM and the Health Science Center. I am confident his leadership will accelerate our position as a leading medical school in the country.”
