A medical toxicology fellow at Parkland Health & Hospital System’s North Texas Poison Control Center has been named the director of Louisville, Kentucky’s health department.
Dr. Joann Schulte will begin as the head of the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness on April 19, according to the Louisville Business Journal. The health department there has been without a leader for a year. Schulte is a graduate of The UNT Health Science Center at Fort Worth’s Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. She earned her master’s degree in public health from Atlanta’s Emory University.
Healthcare was her second career. She spent years as a medical reporter at The Dallas Morning News before getting her doctorate of osteopathic medicine. She’s been an editorial fellow at the journal Pediatrics and investigated more than 100 disease outbreaks as a medical epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the job she did before joining Parkland.
