Provisions tucked into Texas’ new open carry law now allow licensed gun owners to bring their firearms into the 10 psychiatric hospitals operated by the state.

As The Austin American-Statesman reports, the law allows Texans with a gun license to bring the firearm into the facilities, which house the severely mentally ill. Another provision bars those state-run facilities from putting signs up with “no guns” messaging. The law, which legalizes carrying a licensed weapon in a holster outside a person’s clothing, didn’t specifically ban firearms from the psychiatric hospitals. Because of that oversight, state officials told the Austin daily that guns are allowed just as they are in non-medical public buildings.

Officials with the Texas Department of State Health Services, which oversees the facilities, are urging residents to not bring firearms inside the psychiatric hospitals.
