Last week, Methodist Dallas Medical Center surgeon Dr. Alejandro Mejia performed three successful liver transplants in 24 hours.

WFAA Channel 8 did a feature on the rare feat, covering 52-year-old Julie Mallindine’s transplant procedure—the final one of the day. The surgeries took five hours each; it’s rather rare to find three organ matches within a 24 hour period. WFAA reports that Methodist has about 150 patients awaiting a transplant at any given time. Surgeons perform about 60 a year, and the typical wait is about six months.
