11 Fit Things to Do in Dallas This December

Give yourself the ultimate gift by participating in these fitness events.

December: a month to burn off Thanksgiving turkey, to start good resolutions early, and to give back. We’ve found a few ways to hit any or all of these goals, whether through an advent of free yoga, fashionable bike rides, or walks with our furry friends. A number of these events are also charitable, so you can get fit and benefit your community. Talk about a gift that keeps on giving.

December 1-25: 25 Days of Presence With Uptown Yoga

Uptown Yoga doesn’t want to see you check out of your workout routine, so they’re inviting you to check out their classes — for free. From December 1 to 25, one of the three Dallas locations will have a free class, and a membership is not required. Several of the classes are all levels, while some will focus on beginner techniques, core exercises, or deep stretching. The series ends with a Christmas Day Row at the Uptown location. Go ahead and give yourself a near-month of presence, one of the best presents. Get self-awareness here.

December 3: Tweed Ride

This event promises to be so much of a spectacle that traffic will slow — and maybe stop — to check out you and your fellow cyclists. Departing from the Exposition Avenue gates of Fair Park at noon on December 3, a convoy of bicycles will pour through Deep Ellum to the Arts District, decked out in their best tweed. The pace is moderate enough to include everyone in the family. There will be two breaks for photos and regrouping. At the end, you’ll be rewarded with a group picnic, live music, and games. Bring cash for hot apple cider. Proceeds will go to Bike Friendly Oak Cliff. Find more details on the fashionable affair here.

December 3: “Mama Said Knock Out Self Doubt”

Kickboxing to an hour of 90s hits for charity — we’re not sure if it gets more energetic and fun than that. Twenty dollars gets you into the December 3rd class (which starts at 3 p.m.) and will be followed with light refreshments and a raffle. Feel free to make an additional donation to the Movemeant Foundation, which teaches body confidence and smart health to young women. Empower yourself and others here.

December 10: Dallas Dog Jog

Grab your furry best friend and head to Knox-Henderson’s Outdoor Voices for a dog jog. The two-mile route will start at the Travis Street store and will end at the Katy Trail. Afterward, there will be a tail gate at the store with plenty of treats for canines and humans alike. The fun starts at 11 a.m.

December 10: Frosty 5K and Merry Mile

The city of Frisco is getting frosty on December 10. The day starts with a Merry Mile at 8 a.m., followed by the 5K. Run individually in your age category or as a team. If you’re running in a group, awards such as Largest Team, Best Team Spirit, and Best T-Shirt/Costume are on the line. A portion of the proceeds benefits S.O.A.R. Charitable Fund, which provides recreational activities to the city of Frisco at no cost to residents. Make merry here.

December 11: Santa Run

A “sea of Santas” will participate in this 5K, 1-mile fun run and festival on December 11. You’ll receive a five-piece Kris Kringle suit upon registering. If you bring a furry friend or a stroller, decorate accordingly, as prizes are in order. Really get into character and bring a toy: one of the beneficiaries of this year’s run is Toys for Tots. The race ends with a festival, complete with live music, hot cocoa, food, Santa’s Playground, and Vendor Village. Make your way right down Santa Clause Lane here.

December 11: BMW Dallas Marathon

The marathon season is returning December 11. The 46th annual BMW Dallas Marathon, Half Marathon, and Behringer Relay will take participants through the natural aesthetic of White Rock Lake, historical landmarks downtown, and various neighborhoods in between. The full marathon is already sold out, but don’t miss your chance to get in on the action of the half marathon or relay. The race is partnering with 10 charities this year, benefiting everything from a young Dallas resident who has recently suffered a brain injury to creating social dance classes for children. Block parties are happening all along the course from several sports teams partnering with the race. Get to know your city here.

December 11: Ugly Christmas Sweater & Yoga Brunch

With this event, you don’t have to compromise your brunch plans to get in a good workout. Maybe just the nice outfit you usually wear. Come decked out in your ugliest Christmas sweater (especially if you want to win a gift card to Outdoor Voices and Esther Penn), and get ready for a rooftop yoga session. Afterward, enjoy your brunch and mimosas, and be sure to check out the pop-up shops. A portion of the proceeds will go to Interfaith Dallas. You can also donate new or gently used sweaters and coats. Stretch forth here.

December 18: Hiking at Arbor Hills Nature Preserve

Take advantage of dog-friendly events this holiday season. Dogs DFW, a group dedicated to showcasing area events that welcome dogs, has your back. Take your fur babies out on a leisurely walk at the Arbor Hills Nature Preserve at 10 a.m. December 18. Hot chocolate and cookies will be provided as well. Have a dog day here.

December 24: A Christmas Spirit Classic 5K

You’ve made it to Christmas Eve, so keep up that momentum of fitness with the 6th annual Christmas Spirit Classic. Participate in either the 1 mile run/walk or the 5K, and enjoy caroling while there. Arlington Life Shelter and Arlington Charities will be accepting donations of toys and socks for children, and proceeds will benefit St. Alban’s Episcopal of Arlington. Keep Christmas well here.

December 31 — January 1: New Year’s Double

It’s never too early to start the next year of health off. The New Year’s Double in Allen offers a marathon, a half marathon, and a 5K on both December 31 and January 1. You are invited to run any combination of races over both days and will receive Challenger plates in addition to finisher medals. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Allen Parks Foundation. Previous year’s earnings went to the kidMania playground, built by the community and widely regarded as the largest handicap-accessible playground in the state of Texas. Start your resolutions a day early here.
