Leading Off (1/5/24)

We have a beautiful weekend ahead of us. "Seasonably cool," the experts say.

Copper Thefts Leave South Dallas Businesses Without Phone, Internet. Business owners in the 75210 ZIP code, which mostly include the Mill City neighborhood and just south of Scyene Road, say they’ve been unable to receive or make calls or use internet since Christmas. AT&T blames the outages on copper thefts, something we’ve reported on in nearby Exposition Park. Others say it’s a symptom longstanding inequity and disinvestment in the neighborhood, which has been analyzed by SMU.

Project Underway to Connect Texas’ Grid to Louisiana, Mississippi. The Federal Regulatory Commission in 2014 approved the Southern Spirit Transmission project, which could tie Texas’ power grid to the one that covers our eastern neighbors. It would span 400 miles and allow for the ability to send or receive up to 2,000 megawatts, and has received approval from the Texas Public Utility Commission. Louisiana and Mississippi still have to agree, but if they do, this could be complete by 2029.

Rain Is Gone, Cool Weekend Ahead. We might get some fog in the morning, but most of the weekend will be sunny and in the 50s. Lows will be in the mid 30s, but expect that to fade by lunchtime.
