That Story About the Boob Musical

Yes, a Dallas plastic surgery is writing and producing a musical about breast implants.

Last summer, I stumbled across something quite remarkable: it was a website for a musical titled cleaVage, written by a local plastic surgeon named Ron Friedman. It blew my mind a little. So I sent an email to Alice Laussade of Meat Fight fame. Alice is also a James Beard Award-winning humor writer.

I sent a link to the website and wrote: “Alice, I invite you to spend 10 minutes clicking around here.” That’s all I said.

An hour later, Alice wrote back: “Oh my good Jesus. The production value on these recordings is something else. And going after Drake with his own version of ‘God’s Plan’ is so brave. Happy to write 12,000 words about this guy writing a musical about the history of breast implants.”

You know where this is headed. It’s a bit shorter than 12,000 words, but Alice’s story ran in the January issue of D Magazine. Only D Magazine is brave enough to run a story like this, and only Alice could have pulled it off. It’s smart and funny as hell and actually quite sweet.

The story went online today. If you haven’t read it yet, you’re in for a treat.

Editor’s note (1/18/23): an early version of this post faithfully quoted Alice’s email in which she attributed the song “God’s Plan” to Lil Nas X. That was a mistake and it has been corrected. We deeply regret the error and extend our sincerest apologies to both Drake, Lil Nas X, and God.
