What if I told you ESPN made a 30 for 30 documentary about the infamous 1988 Carter High School football team, and that it was set to air on Aug. 24?
Well, I am. Telling you that. Right now. ESPN’s acclaimed documentary series will tackle the story of the “team you don’t remember from Friday Night Lights,” the team cast in that book and film as the big city villains who squashed Odessa Permian’s underdog dreams of a state title. What Carter Lost takes a closer look at one of the greatest high school football teams of all time, and at its dramatic fall. Not too long after winning the state championship, six players from the Oak Cliff high school were convicted in a rash of robberies, and the team’s title was later stripped for a violation of the no pass, no play law.
A 2015 feature film, Carter High, which is available on Netflix, dramatized a story that needs no embellishing, but I’d expect 30 for 30 to really do it justice. A trailer for the documentary is below.
