The voting for the Greatest Dallasites of All Time is off to a roaring start, and so far I’m generally impressed with the rankings that the wisdom of the D Magazine crowd has come up with. Remember that these change as each new vote is cast, so you’ll want to come back often between now and September 23, when we’ll finish the contest.
Also, please note that we can tell when certain competitors have had their vote totals unscrupulously spiked. So please don’t do that. It’s wasted effort because we’ll be removing such votes from the final totals anyway.
Before we launched this yesterday, there were certain key match-ups that I was interested in seeing play out. For instance, there are seven men named “George” in the running.
Unsurprisingly, former President George W. Bush is leading that group. As of the time I’m writing this post, he’s sitting at No. 18.
Next up, currently No. 34, is George Kessler, a city planner who had a lot to with how Dallas is laid out today.
Architect George Dahl, whose most famous works are the Art Deco buildings at Fair Park, sits at No. 60. (By the way, you really should read “Akin vs. Dahl,” a 1979 D Magazine article that ranks among our 40 greatest stories ever.)
Dallas Morning News‘ longtime publisher and owner George Bannerman Dealey ranks 66, so he’s got a shot at overtaking Dahl in the final count.
Former city manager George Schrader, who was instrumental in the building of City Hall and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, claims No. 92.
All of those men would finish in the Top 100 and thus appear in the December issue of D Magazine if voting were over already. Thankfully for judge George Aldredge (No. 241) and pastor George W. Truett (No. 244), they still have time to make up ground.
