Winners and Losers This Week in Dallas (8/26/16)

The uppers and downers of the last seven days.

Winners

Dallas Cowboys
Sure, they “lost” their preseason scrimmage against the Seattle Seahawks. And, yeah, Tony Romo fell to the turf with an injury on the third play of the game. But the quarterback isn’t yet out for the season, so hope remains for 2016. +9

Edgar the Pup
The one-year-old dog took off as soon as he arrived at his new home in Roanoke six weeks ago and has remained at large since. Seemingly the entire town has mobilized as #TeamEdgar, but no one has been able to bring the puppy in, despite many reported sightings:

“I’ve seen Edgar four times,” said neighbor Deidra Hepp, who last tried to lure the pup to safety with the help of smoked provolone cheese and hot dogs. “He is gone so fast, that you just see a little brown dot, running.”

So far, Edgar has managed to outrun every resident who tries to help him. With coyotes and snakes in the woods nearby, neighbors know time is running out.

“We need to find this bugger. It’s been six weeks. He’s getting thinner. He needs human touch,” said Hepp.

I prefer to believe Edgar is merely answering the call of the wild, heeding the long-buried instincts passed on by his wolf ancestors. For this, he has earned our respect.  +K-9

Coalition For a New Dallas
The PAC co-founded by D Magazine Partners ownership mobilized a couple hundred people to show up to this week’s DART board meeting to speak in favor of a downtown subway. +D2

Knox Street
The popular road for shopping and dining will improve its pedestrian-friendliness by narrowing from four lanes to three. What will be a pain for drivers passing through into Highland Park will be a net benefit to the neighborhood. +734,700

Yu Darvish
He’s the first Texas Rangers pitcher to homer since 1997. Darvish didn’t get a cheap one either, sending the ball deep to center in the team’s 6-5 win over Cincinnati on Wednesday. +410

Losers

Tiffinni Young
The Dallas City Councilwoman was slapped with a $500,000 lawsuit this week by the daughter of a woman mauled to death by loose dogs earlier this year. Young stands accused of encouraging the woman to file suit against the city and to solicit the services of one of Young’s lawyer friends. -7

Affluenza Mom
Nothing wrong with working as a bartender, but Tonya Couch allegedly has been telling her customers that the only work she could get after her arrest for fleeing to Mexico with her infamous son, Ethan, is slinging drinks at the Honky Tonk Woman Saloon in Azle. -1

Texas Rangers
The team is in first place, looking like a lock to make the playoffs. Yesterday they opened a series with the Cleveland Indians that very possibly could be a preview of an American League playoff series. The game was at night, and the weather was reasonably comfortable for August. But only 23,768 fans showed up for the fun. I’m guessing more sports fans preferred to stay home and watch the Dallas Cowboys’ latest dress rehearsal? Remember when Josh Hamilton upset people by saying Dallas-Fort Worth isn’t a “baseball town”? This is what he meant. -22,232

Lew Blackburn
The flip-flopping Dallas ISD board president found himself booted from that post by his fellow trustees following last week’s contentious vote on a proposed tax election. -5

Ezekiel Elliott
Yes, the rookie had a strong game against the Seahawks last night. But he also ran afoul of the boss after TMZ reported that he’d visited a marijuana dispensary in Seattle. -420
