Poll: Should Killing Cops Be Prosecuted as a Hate Crime?

Gov. Greg Abbott thinks it should.

Yesterday Gov. Greg Abbott announced his push to have the Police Protection Act become part of Texas law during next year’s legislative session. The measure would extend hate crime protections to law enforcement officers, enacting harsher penalties for offenses targeted against cops. Do you support the idea?

I’m against all hate crime legislation. Why should the punishment for assaulting a police officer or homosexual individual be any different than assaulting a person for any other reason. If the punishment isn’t deterring the crime, shouldn’t we just make punishment for all of these offenses higher?

      I agree completely.

      I disagree.

Isin’t killing a police officer already a capital felony? That’s the most serious of crimes, so I am not sure what value that brings.
