Things To Do In Dallas Tonight: Jan. 28

Garrison Keillor takes a victory lap on the prairie.
Your prairie home companion takes one of his final bows tonight at the Eisemann Center.
Your prairie home companion takes one of his final bows tonight at the Eisemann Center.

I would say A Prairie Home Companion is the aural equivalent of watching paint dry, but Garrison Keillor is far more aggressively boring. The paint doesn’t have any malicious intent. It’s just paint, doing its job. Keillor, I always imagine, takes some kind of perverse joy in putting you to sleep.

I don’t “get” Keillor. At least 17 million weekly listeners do, however, and far be it from me to dissuade them from going to see the Prairie Home Companion host tonight at the Eisemann Center in Richardson. The radio host is retiring from his little gig on the prairie after this national tour, so say farewell while you can.

Elsewhere, Lupe Fiasco performs at Gas Monkey Live, and MBS Productions premieres a new show.

For the record, I mean no ill will to Garrison Keillor or people who enjoy his work. I wish I heard whatever it is those 17 million weekly listeners are hearing. Maybe I just need to listen harder. Anyway, Keillor’s at the Eisemann Center. Showtime is 8 pm.

Lupe Fiasco has had some spectacular misfires in his career, but the rapper will always be good in my book for his verse on Kanye West’s “Touch The Sky.” Fiasco is joined by six other rappers of varying degrees of fame tonight at Gas Monkey Live.

MBS Productions will premiere Slave Letters, a show that includes staged readings of letters written by slaves in the U.S. alongside performances of spirituals and other music from the era. The production runs through Feb. 14 at the Stone Cottage Theatre at the Addison Theatre Center.
