Reading (or rereading) Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter From a Birmingham Jail” is never a bad idea, and you should spend part of your MLK Day doing just that.

The city’s parade has run its course by now, but a festival celebrating the civil rights leader’s legacy will be at Fair Park through the afternoon. A handful of other events in King’s honor are set for tonight.

Writer and historian Teju Cole will speak at the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture’s MLK Symposium at City Performance Hall. Guests can also look forward to performances by local artists, including an excerpt from the fantastic MLK play The Mountaintop.

The Alamo Drafthouse will show Selma, the acclaimed film about King’s campaign in Alabama and the 1965 civil rights march on Montgomery.

The Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo is up and running daily through Feb. 6. Perhaps some bold cowpoke can wrangle the Charco Broiler Cow rampaging about Jefferson Boulevard in Oak Cliff.
