Today’s a sad day for local media. The Dallas Morning News, which has been undergoing an extensive reorganization, has announced that it will close FD, its fashion, art, and style magazine, as well as its NeighborsGo editions. From the DMN story:
FD focused on the Dallas area’s luxury market, including fashion, décor, architecture, art and people. The glossy, stand-alone magazine evolved from theNews’ Fashion!Dallas section created in 1978. The award-winning publication’s coverage last year included features on the history of Dallas’ famed NorthPark Center for its 50th anniversary.
Thirteen NeighborsGo jobs were cut, and six FD positions were eliminated. Some employees could return in different roles.
The News is currently undergoing a newsroom reorganization, and some departing neighborsgo and FD staffers had applied for new positions. News editor Mike Wilson praised the journalists and their strong work. . . .
Details about the profitability of the community newspaper section and the luxury lifestyle publications were not released Friday. But Moroney mentioned the newspaper industry’s ongoing financial troubles.
“It remains a challenging time for our industry,” he said in the email “We must focus on the parts of our business that can make a material financial contribution to our success. The unfortunate reality is that NeighborsGo and FD have struggled financially for some time, and we have not been able to make them consistently and meaningfully profitable.”
FD was a strong, intelligent, and often vital authority on much going on in this city’s arts and cultural scenes. The city is a poorer place for having lost that voice. And some of the most talented people in Dallas media lost their jobs today. What a week.
