Things To Do In Dallas Tonight: Dec. 9

With a long way to go until Christmas, make the most of your Wednesday.

Some of you are counting down the days to Christmas. Others, myself included, are counting down the days until the new Star Wars movie is released. But we can’t spend our lives playing the waiting game. We’ve got a Wednesday to get through. Of Monsters and Men play at Verizon Theatre, A Christmas Carol brightens your holidays, Mark Cuban lights a menorah, a soon-to-be-bookstore throws a party, and our own Peter Simek rocks your world with some truth.

Your alternative rock radio station has rounded up Of Monsters and Men (the Icelandic Arcade Fire), Panic! At the Disco (theatrical emo band), and Sublime with Rome (overrated ska band of some fame trudging along with a fill-in lead singer way past its expiration date) for its holiday concert at Verizon Theatre. How The Edge Stole Christmas kicks off around 5 pm with performances from the undercard acts.

Dallas Theater Center’s A Christmas Carol has a new director and a new Scrooge for its annual production, but the adaptation of Dickens’ story is a delightful dose of holiday spirit, as usual. Do some of these other 50 things for Christmas while you’re at it.

Your Dallas Mavericks play the Atlanta Hawks tonight at the American Airlines Center. Before that, a menorah lighting — Mark Cuban has done the honors in past years — and some kosher festivities will mark the fourth night of Hanukkah at Victory Park. The game is at 8:30 pm, with the Jewish Heritage Night celebration beginning several hours before that. Gentiles are also welcome.

Dallas publishing house Deep Vellum is launching its own bookstore in Deep Ellum early next year. To mark the occasion, stop by the storefront at 3000 Commerce St. for a housewarming with drinks, music, and discussion of the city’s burgeoning independent literary scene.

Insiders is a new speaking series at Ash Studios “that aims to reveal inside information and knowledge to the audience, and shift who in the city is allowed to have this information.” Said information will be shuffled to the group of people attending this secretive — no phones or recording devices are allowed — gossip circle. I imagine there are good reasons that this “confidential” knowledge can’t be blasted to the masses in a YouTube video to more effectively upset the balance of power, but I do find the whole cloak-and-dagger routine a little off-putting. Regardless, our very own Peter Simek is leading the “performative conversation” tonight, if you want to get some of that sweet inside scoop. The Simek Truth Bombs start dropping at 8 pm. My theory: Peter will reveal that Maxwell Anderson left the DMA because the museum director is a Reptilian whose true nature was about to be revealed.
