We were without internet for a bit earlier this morning, and it really helped put things in perspective. I spent some time writing on a piece of paper. I looked at my desk. I engaged in some moderate navel-gazing. It was refreshing. Life’s too short to spend extended amounts of time absorbing data from a computer screen. Turn off, tune out, and drop in to one of the following: A tree lighting celebration at Fair Park, a Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer musical, or Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox.

Fair Park lights up its Christmas tree tonight. Before and after the main event, enjoy live entertainment courtesy of Denise Lee, carolers strolling the grounds, a petting zoo, a light show at the Esplanade, and other attractions for the whole family. Parking is free.

The song “Silver and Gold” from the popular animated Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer TV special has been stuck in my head for the last 22 years, but I won’t hold that against the movie. A musical stage adaptation of the story of the little reindeer that could starts a three night and one afternoon run at the Majestic this evening.

Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox is a cover band that nevertheless feels wholly original. Bradlee and company’s old-fashioned interpretations of contemporary hits (example: The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army” as a New Orleans dirge) cast some of your favorite songs in a different light.
