NFL Hall of Famer and former Dallas Cowboy Charles Haley doesn’t mince words about the Cowboys defense, which figured in the team’s second straight loss yesterday. While the defense was supposed to be the team’s hallmark this year, Haley told a crowd in Dallas this morning, “They’re dumber than a box of rocks. They don’t listen, and that’s why we’re losing.”

Haley, a notoriously uncompromising, blunt-talking hard charger—and the only player with five Super Bowl rings (three with the Cowboys, two with the 49ers)—made the comments during at a charity breakfast for the nonprofit CARE anti-substance-abuse group.

The ex-linebacker and defensive end recalled addressing the ‘Boys behind closed doors and riling them up with his tough love. “You all elevate stupid to new levels and new heights,” Haley said he told them. When some of the players protested angrily, he added: “Oh, you want to fight me. But you don’t fight on the field!”
