Christina Geyer Leaves FD for Dallas-based Relaunch of Liberty Magazine

I guess she chose this over death.

I am not sure when this memo was sent, but it came from Rob Brinkley, the editor of the Morning NewsFD magazine. He told his staff:

Our Christina Geyer is off on a new adventure: The reincarnation and modernization of Liberty magazine, published from 1924 to 1950 and whose essayists included F. Scott Fitzgerald, Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi and Babe Ruth. (His piece? “How it Feels to Be a Has-Been.”)

Its stories inspired movies. Perhaps you’ve heard of a few: My Man Godfrey, Double Indemnity, Sergeant York.

Its weekly circ was 3 million. Liberty’s revival will be Dallas-based, and Christina will be guiding much of its creative — and bringing its 17,000 stories into modern times, in many forms.

At FD, her title was managing editor, but she not only kept us on track with our many processes, invoices, contributors and shoves, she also wrote and produced many, many stories. On top of that, she was the issue editor of FD Love, our wedding magazine, finding great stories, writing several of them, overseeing all the others, producing epic fashion shoots and building key relationships in the wedding world.

You see why this is bittersweet?

We’re so happy for Christina. This is a fantastic, thrilling chance for her. (And, FYI, we’re cooking up ways to have her contribute to FD.) Her last day will be Friday, January 16.

I’m a little confused as to how the Liberty title in question can coexist peacefully with the Liberty magazine published by the Seventh-day Adventist Church and the Liberty founded in 1987 by R.W. Bradford. But I suppose one can never have too much liberty.
