Friday
While the movies reviewed on FrontRow this week were not the best films we’ve seen this summer, there was one glaring exception: Richard Linklater’s Boyhood. Ever since our early preview from South by Southwest, there has been nothing but endless praise for the drama, which you may have heard was shot over 12 years. Even if you haven’t seen it, there’s already a beauty to that sort of dedication. It’s nice to see a film get so much hype without the aid of gratuitous explosions or comic book characters.
Note: The Daniel Silva speaking engagement at the Dallas Museum of Art is tonight, just in case there was any confusion about that from yesterday.
The Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference is already underway as I type this. If you aren’t one of the lucky ones to attend the programming and lectures at the event, I hear that the hotel bar at the Hilton DFW Executive Conference Center is the most happening place to be this weekend, and not a glorified teacher’s lounge like you might suspect. At least that’s what I’m always told by the fine seekers of truth in my close proximity.
Saturday
There are a couple of new exhibitions at both the gallery and museum level opening this weekend that should be mentioned. Matthew Sontheimer’s work will be shown at Talley Dunn, and the delightfully confounding pieces mark the Nebraska-based artist’s return to the Knox-area gallery.
The DMA will begin its submission to a takeover by the Slavs and Tatars collective, in an exhibition that runs through December. Their sociopolitically-minded output tackles the often delicate issues concerning the massive region between the Berlin Wall and the Great Wall, while being mindful of clashes and shifts in language and culture therein. Sunday
Finally, consider ending your weekend at the lovely little bar, Record Lounge, down in Expo Park. Sunday’s theme will be jazz records, and they’ll accompany those dusty sides with the kind of drink specials you usually only see at happy hour. Also, it’s National Lollipop Day on Sunday. I cheated and I’ve already had mine today. Enjoy your weekend.
