Of the many beautiful movie theaters that Dallas is so lucky to possess, I am often partial to the rather unsubtle chandelier that hangs so heavily above the Angelika Film Center at Mockingbird Station. But I have to say, as a former suburbanite, I certainly have appreciated its little sister to the north, the Angelika Plano as well. It’s hard to believe, but the art house has now enjoyed a full ten years at the Shops at Legacy. I have many fond memories there, including the 2011 screening of the NBA Finals as well as the more recent showing of the Morrissey concert film, 25 Live. Of course there were also many small-run and foreign movies where it was only me (and perhaps an unlucky date) as the sole audience. The Angelika will be celebrating its glorious cinematic decade with a look back at some of the critical and commercial successes that have flickered across its screens all day today, including No Country for Old Men and The King’s Speech. A cake ceremony will take place at 1 pm, and I may just ditch work as soon as I publish this to make it in time.

The topical comedy By the Way, Meet Vera Stark is currently playing at Theatre Three through mid-July. The intriguing plot tackles issues of class and ethnicity against the backdrop of the often exclusive film industry of the early to mid-20th Century. Humorous moments break up the depressing realities of the era in Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage’s acclaimed play. Curtain is at 7:30 pm.

Finally, “Cool Out” at the Crown and Harp will be hosting its annual tribute to Michael Jackson, in observance of the 5th anniversary of the King of Pop’s untimely death. DJ Sober will make a rare guest appearance and sparkly gloves will be handed out to some attendees. This is often one of the more packed events that the weekly hosts, so arrive early.
