In her review of Dallas Summer Musicals’ Mamma Mia, D FrontRow theater critic Lindsey Wilson theorizes about the impact that nostalgia can have on one’s true opinion of a familiar production. In the case of this ABBA-led hit show, nostalgia is a good thing. Wilson goes on to praise Mamma Mia’s depth, which is sometimes lost in all of the hit songs. That takes place at Music Hall at Fair Park this evening, and begins at 7:30.
The Trinity Shakespeare Festival has received heaps of praise for its passionate take on the iconic playwright’s oft-performed work. This year’s season includes both The Tempest and A Comedy of Errors. They begin with The Tempest at 7:30 this evening, at TCU’s Buschman Theatre. Consider happy hour at Winslow’s Wine Cafe before you go, and I’m making that recommendation mostly because they have caramelized-garlic truffle hummus on the menu.
Frozen drink oasis the Twilite Lounge in Deep Ellum will start its summer movie series with Pulp Fiction this evening, in acknowledgement of the film’s 20th anniversary. There will also be an extended happy hour, with the screening at 9 pm.
If you had plans to have dinner at Lockhart Smokehouse in Oak Cliff tonight, the restaurant will be closed for its Smoke Camp class. All manner of brisket-related secrets will be shared, and Revolver Brewing will be onsite for a beer tasting. Call 214-944-5521 for reservations.
Finally, 90s rock fans will be glad to know that Failure is performing at House of Blues this evening. The somewhat overlooked act was not huge at the time, but its legend has grown in the years since. According to an interview with the Dallas Observer this week, the band claims to have not played Dallas since 1997. If you remember being at that show, don’t do the math. Yes, we’re that old.
