The San Antonio Spurs are the new NBA champs. That’s a sentence we’ve all had to type too many times in the past 15 years, and the public reaction is making me question some of the MFFLs in the community. That’s because I’m seeing a suspicious amount of praise for San Antonio’s “teamwork” and how we should “respect them.” That’s great and all, but I only have one comment on this matter: The Dallas Mavericks were the only team to take the Spurs to seven games during the entire playoffs. Losing four games to one is pitiful, and the 2014 Finals were so dull I ended up becoming far more of a World Cup fan as a result. On to today’s events:
There’s a lot of excitement over the launch of Deep Vellum, the publishing entity specializing in translated texts that has some fairly lofty goals concerning Dallas’ status as a cultural hub. The nonprofit will celebrate its launch at the Wild Detectives bookstore in Oak Cliff this evening, which is an appropriate pairing between two rising stars of the city’s literary community.
For years now, Bryan Street Tavern has been a reliable spot for pizza and other bar food done with little glamour but consistent quality. They’re stepping it up slightly tonight with a beer dinner, which will pair different varieties of Alaskan Brewing Company’s line, along with selections from Bryan Street’s classic menu.
And elsewhere in special dinner events this evening, FT33 will have chef Matthew Jennings in the kitchen as part of its continuing Guest Chef Series. Jennings is known for his avant-garde approach to cheese-making which includes the use of European ales, ash, and hay as part of his process. He has long worked in Providence, Rhode Island, but is soon opening his next restaurant in Boston. Those are great food towns both, and allowing Jennings and Matt McCallister to work on a multi-course meal for you sounds like a heck of a way to spend your Monday.
