We have a couple of high-profile events for you this morning, and though our first happening is sold out, it should still be mentioned on account of the gravity of the issue it raises. The First Annual Fashion for Freedom Luncheon kicks off today, which is a combination luncheon/fashion show benefiting Mosaic Family Services. That would be the Dallas-based organization providing actual hands-on help to area victims of domestic violence, human trafficking, and other egregious forms of human rights abuse. The luncheon will by hosted by Al Biernat at his namesake restaurant, along with a fashion show featuring the work of designer and activist Abi Ferrin, along with the up-and-coming fashion designer, Juliette Longuet. A trunk show will end the luncheon, providing the guests a chance to take home some of the wares on display, and proceeds will go toward Mosaic’s new much-needed shelter. As I stated, today’s event is sold out, but that only means you should be extra prepared for next year.
Our next event is also partially sold out: Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana’s speaking engagement at the DMA’s Horchow Auditorium. One interesting note about the event is the fact that former Texas Monthly editor (and defender of dubious North Texas nomenclature), Jake Silverstein, was originally booked to moderate this evening. I was told by the DMA via email that it was due to a “last minute engagement,” however landing a job as the new editor for New York Times Magazine might just be a lifetime’s worth of last minute engagements. Would that all of our lives were so delightfully complicated.
The iconic author will discuss his newest novel, The Last Kind Words Saloon, and if the subject turns to Dallas, McMurtry then might momentarily rechristen his book, The No Kinds Words Saloon, judging by his previously stated opinion of our city. I am now kicking myself for not attempting to get a ticket earlier. You can still pay to see see a live simulcast of the event in the museum’s neighboring C3 theater, or in the DMA cafe with an optional three-course dinner. More details are available here and here.
