I can’t speak to the frequency with which others who recommend events around Dallas actually attend the very things they suggest you do, but I can tell you that I’m out and about almost every evening. I call it “living the list.” I actually met a couple of friends at the Crown and Harp last night to see the psych band from Guadalajara I told you about on yesterday’s Things To Do, and they were a potent reminder of just how earth-shaking and convincing that genre of music can be. The upstairs funk and disco party was bustling, and when the two crowds combined it reached the point to where it was hard to find space on the patio to even stand. While in that packed space, I was also told that another event from yesterday—Oral Fixation at the Wyly—sold out. And it was only Monday.
Can Tuesday measure up? We begin on a much quieter note, though not any less exciting, as the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture begins their appropriately lengthy course on The Iliad. Over the next four Tuesdays, executive director Dr. Larry Allums will draw parallels in understanding how Homer’s thematically timeless work still resonates in our contemporary war culture. The Latino Cultural Center currently has an exhibition of all-Latina artists, or simply—Ella: Exhibiting Local Latina Artists, and the show addresses the lack of representation for women and minorities that has been a constant throughout history. Photographer Andi Harman and I caught a solo show by one of the artists following the opening of this event, and you can see the evidence over on FrontRow.
Once you’re done with either school or the art gallery, consider heading to the expansive patio at Lee Harvey’s to finish off the evening. Tonight they’ll have half-price burgers, while veteran Dallas DJ Wanz Dover plays rock and soul classics on vinyl. The records spin from 8pm to midnight.
