I have some very sad news before we get started: North Texas dance icon Bruce Wood has died; he was only 53. Wood’s work in his original run in Fort Worth and subsequent return to the area has had a profound and singular impact on the local arts community. Peter Simek has more details at FrontRow. The Heritage Auctions Annex over in the Design District has gotten into the habit of letting the public preview some of their amassed collections of rare contemporary design and artwork before it goes to auction, and thank goodness for that. Tonight’s tremendous stockpile includes treasures by Warhol, Barbara Kruger, Christo, Rauschenberg, Johns, Hockney, and Lichtenstein … basically an assortment of talent you would never be able to witness outside of a major retrospective. The actual auction takes place on Saturday, so head over this evening for a drink and to gawk before the heavy-hitters arrive this weekend. Or if you’re a heavy-hitter, take us out for a round at Meddlesome Moth afterward.
The once-shocking and now almost reverent film director, John Waters, will be at the Kessler this evening, for a look back at his career and the origins of his very particular style. The introspective one-man show, “This Filthy World,” has been excellently received, and the aforementioned Peter Simek has his own take on Waters in our May issue, which you can read here.
