I don’t think anyone would dispute that Easter dinner tends to be on the blander end of the holiday food spectrum, but an association with salted ham and boiled eggs certainly doesn’t help matters. I’m probably more excited than I should be to purchase half-priced bags of rabbit-shaped candy today, but that’s a different issue entirely.
If you’re looking to forget about the dullness of yesterday’s meal, consider FT33 this evening. The celebrated Design District spot had the genius idea of importing a different celebrity chef on the third Monday of each month, to serve dinner with an optional wine pairing. I have long felt that the mark of a great city is when it is mature enough to recognize greatness outside of its own borders, so this certainly fits that description.
Tonight’s guest is Providence, RI resident Benjamin Sukle, whose Birch restaurant is a modern American eatery that relies on the natural and environmental cycles of New England’s rich landscape. He’ll be tweaking that slightly for Texas, of course, as there isn’t exactly such thing as “local squid” on most Dallas menus. How he will be tweaking that will be your privilege should you choose to go. Make a reservation by calling 214-741-2629.
Next up, our own Peter Simek will be competing in a live game show revolving around one of the writer’s favorite subjects: Architecture, in conjunction with Dallas Architecture Month. Firmily Feud: An Architectural Game Show will take place at the Main Street Garden Patio Cafe, and will include an assortment of other media figures, city leaders, and of course, architects. Mayor Mike Rawlings and Dallas City Council Rep Phillip Kingston will have remarks ahead of the competition, which begins at 6 pm. I would say, “Good luck,” to Peter, but Mr. Simek is one of the few writers I know who doesn’t really need it.
Ten Bells Tavern will be hosting a Q&A this evening with Dylan Hollingsworth, a local photographer and documentarian. He’ll be joined by filmmaker Wheeler Sparks, to answer questions regarding the duo’s as-yet unmade documentary, Brotherhood: America’s Favorite Muslim Fraternity. The project will tackle the subject of the first Muslim fraternity, Alif Laam Meem, which was founded at nearby UTD, and the story has already drawn national attention. The directors are still in the process of raising funds, but events like this one and Hollingsworth’s general profile around town should help meet the goal.
Lastly, there is a show at Dan’s Silverleaf in Denton tonight, that is atypical for a Monday at this particular venue. It’s singer-songwriter Damien Jurado, and the Seattle artist will likely pull in a different crowd from what the venue’s roots-oriented country fare tends to draw. They’ll likely appreciate it as well, but it’s just that Jurado is a bit more experimental and prickly than most in his genre. Still, his most recent record, Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son, did make the charts, so Jurado hasn’t lost any fans for some of his bizarre tendencies.
