I hope everyone is enjoying a Good Friday off, or at the very least, a reduced workload if you’re in the office. There are certain puzzlingly pastel-colored aspects of Easter that I can never quite grasp, but there are other ways of celebrating the holiday that make perfect sense. Brunch, for instance. Head over to SideDish for the most comprehensive guide to the sacred meal you can find anywhere in Dallas, complete with menus and phone numbers. Of course the quality of that list is no surprise, as it was compiled by our great assistant dining editor, Carol Shih. Carol will be leaving us for San Francisco soon, and though that’s bittersweet for us, congratulations to her. We are, however, desperately seeking her replacement.
Friday
Tonight is the second performance of Neil Young’s two-night stand at the Meyerson. There is a glowing review over at FrontRow, and it looks like an absolute crowd-pleaser, judging by the set list. Our critic Chuck Cox had never seen the veteran singer-songwriter perform previously, and says he was “blown away.” The tickets may be selling for premium prices, but it sounds like it’s worth every penny.
Fondue may have fallen out of fashion some years ago, but if I trusted that anyone could pull off the communal meal in a contemporary setting, it would be Scardello. The shop is hosting their own take on a fondue dinner this evening, which includes multiple towers of cheese, and the requisite finger foods to accompany it. Dessert and alcohol will also be available, if that didn’t already sound decadent enough for you.
Saturday
Today marks the beginning of the Fort Worth Opera Festival, a unique event that runs through May. A variety of works both new and old will be performed, including some surprises. For instance, choosing Bizet’s Pearl Fishers over Carmen is the less likely choice, but that’s what makes this such a singular festival. But now I’m left wondering why Dallas proper doesn’t have its own opera fest, and I’m not sure I like that feeling. Touché, Fort Worth.
Sunday
One late entry brunch that didn’t make the aforementioned SideDish Easter Brunch list came to us by way of Hotel ZaZa this morning. The imaginative menu includes everything from rabbit tamales to a chocolate s’mores mousse bar. See the rest of the menu here. We’ve recommended the hotel’s Mother’s Day brunch in the past, so it seems to be a safe bet. This Easter brunch is actually a bit less expensive.
Finally, the Crown and Harp is having its first ever swap meet on Sunday afternoon. Bring your rare vinyl records to sell and trade, or pick up some new ones to drag home and annoy your significant other. Entertainment will be provided by Def Rain, Ronnie Heart, and other quality acts from around the region.
